1st Conditional

The 1st conditional is one of four basic conditional sentence forms and believe it or not it is actually very easy to learn how to accurately choose the form you need to build your sentences. First of all, I highly recommend that you forget about trying to distinguish between the 0 conditional, the 1st, the 2nd and the 3rd conditional. As always on learn-English.Options I suggest that you focus on the function! It's all about function, function, function!

So from now on I want you to concentrate on the following four types of conditional sentences based on their functions.

The scientific conditional

(A.K.A) The 0 conditional.
Here is your first example, this example is very well known so will probably have seen it before. That is a good thing as all you will have to do is concentrate on remembering to call it ..The scientific conditional. This sentence express a certain fact that will result following a specific action. If you heat water to 100 degrees then there is no doubt, it is scientifically certain that water boils when it reaches 100 degrees.

If you heat water to 100 degree it boils.

Try thinking about this sentence in its true absolute sense by substituting "if" with "when".

When you heat water to 100 degrees it boils. FACT.

More coming very soon.

Hello,

thank you for this helpful explanation. I will call it "the scientific conditional" from now because it is easy to understand.
