ESL Online Test - Cambridge computer based testing
Cambridge ESOL is now offering a selection of their exams in Computer based testing format. The exam is the same, the qualification is the same but it is now much more accessible than the traditional paper based versions. Cambridge exams are world famous and can be a very effective way for language students to validate their English language skills in professional or academic contexts, the drawback has typically been the length of time required to complete the certification process given that students typically need to apply for the exam months in advance, and later wait for months after sitting the exam before receiving results. There are a number of other benefits to computer-based testing. The results are available much faster, and can be accessed on-line as little as three weeks from taking the exam. It is more convenient and “user friendly” for many to be able to use computer and keyboard instead of pen and paper. Headphones can be used for the listening parts of the exam, which is an advantage over classroom style listening from cassette player speakers (and risk of external noise distractions). It is easier for exam candidates to track their time limits with visible on-line timers. BULATS has been available as a computer-based test for some time and will shortly be available as an online test through the internet. Other exams are set to go online in the future.

The new computer based system (not to be confused with an ESL Online Test) offers more exam dates and allows students to register even up to one week before sitting the exam, which means that candidates can do their exam exactly when they are ready for it.
