How to Learn English Grammar, everything you need to know about easily managing your tenses so your langauge will flow!

Hello! My name is Mary Allen, I work with Graham and I am a TEFL teacher. How to Learn English Grammar? Well, actually it's easy really :))

I know, it's easy for me to say, but really, all you need to do is take one thing at a time and then slowly fit the pieces together in a way that makes sense to you..so you will know how to use the verb tenses. This How to Learn English Grammar page will be more effective for you if you first read Graham's article about English success.
You're probably asking yourself .."What is she talking about now?" Trust me, read his article and then come back to this page.

This Example Will Help You To Discover How to Learn English Grammar ..easily:

Firstly, lets remember that a language is made of "tenses" which refer to time, in other words my choice of tense will depend on when the action I refer to took place (yesterday), takes place (usually), has taken place (already) or will take place (if...) etc. The fact is that the key to knowing how to formulate sentences is knowing how to choose and conjugate the right tense for any specific context.

One of the most basic truths about Verb Tenses is often totally disregarded and lost in that foggy land of "grammar explained". So if you want to improve your use of tenses, or help one of your students to improve then agree to follow this rule:

1. Always define the time, every time, without fail, when you want to make a sentence, because it will help you to decide very quickly which verb tenses to use.

This is really easy using the following word groups:

Adverbs of frequency for describing routines with the present simple.
S.A.U.R.O.N. ie. Sometimes, always, usually, rarely, often, never.

If you want to describe a past action use some of the following:Yesterday, last week, last month, two days/hours/minutes ago.

If you want to describe an action that is happening now:
At the moment, now. In fact, if you want to describe any action that is either happening now or any time you will need to start building your English verb list.

So, as you begin to understand how to learn English grammar you will realise that you will need to also acquire the "ingredients" to apply that grammar to. You will need to start building irregular verb lists, synonym lists and idiom lists.
Don't worry, we will go into detail with each of the verb tenses very soon, and with the right examples it will be easy to follow.

Have a look at our explanation of the "Simple Present" which is also known as the "Present Simple" ...
